Refreshingly delicious is this sweet-tangy smoothie loaded with fresh mango flavors!
When it comes to tropical fruits – the Mango reigns supreme in the Philippines. I grew up with mango trees in our backyard. I have memories of my grandma smoking the mango tree. She would rake the dried leaves and twigs in our backyard into a pile under the mango tree and light a small fire – the purpose is to get the smoke up into the tree. Some say it’s because the smoke drive the bugs away from the precious fruits that they love to nibble on. I don’t know if this is scientifically true but that tree has always given us bag loads of mangoes.
I remember summer afternoons when we take turns using a sickle tied to a long bamboo pole to cut off the fruits from the branch. I’d rather do that than climb the tree! Sometimes though one of our adventurous friends will just climb up the tree and pick the fruits and then throw it down to us. The one who catches the most mangoes with bear hands win. I was never a good catcher so I often ended up just getting the mangoes that landed on the ground! Oh how much fun we had during those summer days. After that we’ll go to the beach and swim!
Can anything be better than a fruity Mango Smoothie or Shake made from super-ripe, tender yellow Mangoes? If you are a Mango lover, then you’d probably say no. But, yes, there is – a GREEN MANGO SMOOTHIE? This week Williams-Sonoma is having a “Not your Typical Smoothie” theme. To celebrate the event, I am featuring my ultimate favorite tropical smoothie – GREEN MANGO SMOOTHIE!
I know it seems weird to use mangoes that are still green and not fully ripe – still kind of tart and tangy. But that is the secret to this truly refreshing and flavorful smoothie. I used mangoes that aren’t quite ripe yet – quite greenish and blend this with just a little honey or sugar, ice and milk! Green mangos and milk may seem quite an odd combination but they are actually perfect together as the tartness of the mango contrast with the milk’s creamy flavor while the sweetener cuts on the tanginess of the fruit. It is a delectably sweet and creamy smoothie with a hint of tang! And for me, that is my kind of smoothie!

2 Green Mangoes (I used 2 Apple Mangoes that are still quite green with crunchy flesh)
1 cup crushed Ice
1 Tablespoon Honey or Agave (or your fave sweetener), or to taste
1/4-1/3 cup Whole milk or Evaporated milk (what they use in the Philippines), or to taste
Place the crushed ice in the bottom of the blender. Add the rest of the ingredients. Process until smooth or to your desired thickness. Adjust the milk and sweetener to your taste. Serve and enjoy right away! Pure tropical bliss!
