Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 1 (about an inch) piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and grated (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger or to taste)
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp chili powder, adjust to desired heat level
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 lb (or 1/2 kilo) ground beef
  • 2 plum tomatoes pureed or finely chopped
  • 1 cup beef stock or water
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup peas fresh or frozen
  • Extra fresh coriander/cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook until the onions have softened. Adjust the heat to low and add all the spices including the fresh ginger (if using). Cook for 1-2 minutes or until aromatic.
  • Stir in the ground beef. Crumble with the fork to separate and cook until it changes its color.
  • Add the tomatoes, beef stock or water then season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and then simmer on low covered for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Add the peas and cook until the peas are done. Adjust the seasoning if needed. So I know that this is not part of the original Keema curry recipe but when I feel I need to balance out the flavors of a dish, I sprinkle a little bit of brown sugar to do so. It will not sweeten the dish (that’s not the aim) but will help enhance the flavor. This is totally optional after all, you may already love the dish as is!
  • Garnish with some chopped Cilantro/Coriander. Enjoy with some yummy turmeric rice (see the recipe link in the notes)! What a perfect combo!
