What is Italian-style Meatloaf?
Italian meatloaf is a mouthwatering variation of the traditional American favorite, combining the best of both worlds – hearty comfort food and zesty Italian flavors. This recipe takes the humble meatloaf to new heights with a blend of ground beef, aromatic herbs, and savory cheeses. Perfect for family dinners or entertaining guests, this Italian-inspired dish is sure to become a staple in your recipe repertoire.
At the heart of this Italian meatloaf is a flavorful mixture of ground beef, vegetables, and seasonings. The recipe calls for 2 pounds of ground beef, providing a substantial base for the loaf. A combination of yellow onion, red pepper, scallions, and parsley adds depth and texture to the meat mixture.
These vegetables are blended to create small pieces, infusing the meatloaf with their flavors without overpowering the dish. Fresh herbs play a crucial role in elevating Italian flavors. A generous ½ cup of fresh basil brings a bright, aromatic quality to the meatloaf. Adding oregano further enhances the Italian profile, while cumin and smoked paprika add complexity and a subtle smoky note.
No Italian-inspired dish would be complete without cheese; this meatloaf doesn’t disappoint. A combination of grated Parmesan and mozzarella cheese are used both in the meat mixture and as a filling. The Parmesan adds a nutty, salty flavor, while the mozzarella creates pockets of gooey, melted goodness throughout the loaf.
What sets this Italian meatloaf apart is the addition of Capocollo slices. Capocollo, a traditional Italian cold cut made from pork neck, adds a rich, slightly spicy flavor to the meatloaf. Layered in the center of the loaf, it creates a delicious surprise with every slice.

Instructions on How to Make delicious Italian Meatloaf
Place parsley, scallion, yellow onion, and red pepper in a blender. Blend until you get small pieces of the vegetables. Don’t over-blend. We don’t want the vegetables to turn into a paste. Place the minced or ground meat in a bowl, along with the blended vegetables and spices (cumin, smoked red pepper and oregano, salt and pepper to taste). Add the eggs and breadcrumbs. Knead the minced meat well with your hands to mix all the ingredients. Note: You can do these steps a day before you cook the Italian Meatloaf to allow the spices to flavor the minced meat.
Prepare baking paper on the kitchen surface. Roll out the ground beef mixture into a 1/4-inch-thick rectangle. Add Capocollo slices in the center of the rectangle. Leave a little space on the sides so you can close the roll and the cheeses don’t leak into the pan.
Top with fresh basil, parmesan, and mozzarella. Wrap the roll tightly.
Line a tray with baking paper and place the roll on it, closing the ends so the cheese does not run out.
Mix the tomato paste with the sugar until smooth. Note: To make the ingredients easier to mix, you can add 1 teaspoon of water to the tomato texture.
Spread the Italian Meatloaf with the tomato mixture and put it in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a golden crust forms on top and the meat is cooked inside. Note: You can check the doneness of the meat with a toothpick. Serve and enjoy!
