WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS FOR AIR FRYER GARLIC PARMESAN CHICKEN WINGS?
- 1 1/2 pounds chicken wings
- 1-2 eggs, beaten
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 8 tablespoons parmesan cheese, finely grated
- 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
- salt and pepper, to taste
- Nonstick Cooking Spray
HOW DO YOU MAKE AIR FRYER GARLIC PARMESAN CHICKEN WINGS?
- Pat dry the chicken wings to ensure they don’t have any excess water or moisture. Don’t skip this part. This is very important. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the cornstarch, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to mix.
- Dip each chicken wing in the beaten egg lightly. Use a brush to remove any excess egg. You just want to lightly coat it and not overdo it. Toss the wings in the parmesan-flavored breading and ensure they’re well coated. Place the wings in a rack as you preheat the air fryer.
- Preheat the air fryer to 380F. Spray the air fryer basket with nonstick spray. Add the wings and generously spray the wings with the cooking spray, too. Cook for 26-28 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Flip the chicken wings halfway through the cooking time.
- Serve immediately on its own or with your favorite chicken dip!
CAN I REPLACE THE CORNSTARCH HERE WITH FLOUR?
I would say – preferably not! The secret to making these chicken wings come out so crispy is the cornstarch so don’t substitute with flour, if possible. Below I explain why cornstarch is so necessary for making these chicken wings perfect!
Cornstarch is often used in fried chicken recipes for a few reasons:
- Crispy coating: Cornstarch helps create a crispy coating on the chicken because it absorbs moisture from the chicken, causing the surface to dry out and become crunchy when fried.
- Tender meat: Cornstarch also helps to tenderize the chicken by breaking down the proteins, resulting in juicy and tender meat.
- Thickening: Cornstarch can also help thicken the coating and make it adhere better to the chicken. This helps to prevent the coating from falling off during the frying process.
- Gluten-free alternative: Cornstarch is gluten-free, making it a great alternative for those with gluten sensitivities.
WHY DO I NEED TO COAT THE CHICKEN WINGS WITH EGG WASH?
Coating chicken in an egg wash before breading or coating it is a common technique used in many fried chicken recipes. The egg wash serves several purposes:
- Adhesion: The egg wash helps the breading or coating adhere to the chicken, creating a crispy exterior that stays in place during the frying process.
- Flavor: The egg wash can add flavor to the chicken, especially if seasoned with spices or herbs.
- Moisture: The egg wash helps to keep the chicken moist during the cooking process. This results in juicy and tender meat.
- Crispiness: The egg wash also helps create a crispy exterior on the chicken. The egg proteins coagulate during the frying process, forming a barrier that locks in moisture and creates a crispy texture.
When coating the chicken in an egg wash, it’s important to use a light touch and not over-coat the chicken. Over-coating can result in a heavy and soggy breading or coating that does not crisp up well. To ensure the best results, it’s recommended to dip the chicken in the egg wash, shake off any excess, and then coat it in the breading or coating of your choice.

Mine always comes out perfect at the temperature in the recipe but you know your air fryer better so adjust temperature if needed.
Do you use grated parm from a bottle or fresh grated Parmesan?
Thanks.
