This event sparked the Protestant Reformation and forever changed the course of Christianity.

The Significance of Reformation Day

Reformation Day is a time for reflection, remembrance, and celebration. It serves as a reminder of the brave individuals like Martin Luther who sought to reform the Church and promote religious freedom.

The Diet of Worms, which took place in 1521, was a key moment in the Reformation. At this assembly, Martin Luther famously declared, “Here I stand; I can do no other.” He refused to recant his beliefs, challenging the Church’s authority and paving the way for the Protestant Reformation.

One way to commemorate this significant event is by gathering with family and friends and sharing a special meal. The Diet of Worms Cake, a no-bake dessert inspired by the historic event, is a delightful and meaningful addition to any Reformation Day celebration.

Why is it called the Diet of Worms Cake?

The term “Diet of Worms” is not related to an actual cake but refers to an important historical event in the Protestant Reformation. In 1521, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V called for an assembly, or “diet,” in the city of Worms, Germany. The purpose of this assembly was to address the growing religious tensions within the Holy Roman Empire, particularly regarding Martin Luther’s teachings and his defiance of the Catholic Church.

Martin Luther was summoned to the Diet of Worms to answer for his beliefs, and it was during this event that he famously refused to recant his teachings with the words, “Here I stand; I can do no other.” This moment is considered a pivotal point in the Protestant Reformation.

The “Diet of Worms Cake” is a playful and creative dessert named in reference to this historic event. It’s not an official or traditional cake but rather a themed dessert meant to commemorate Reformation Day and the Diet of Worms, adding a touch of historical significance to a sweet treat.

Ingredients for Diet of Worms Cake

  • 17 oz package (family-size) of Oreo or chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • 3 oz package of chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 3 oz package of vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 3 1/2 – 4 cups milk
  • 8 oz package of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 container of whipped topping (8 oz), or more as desired
  • Gummy worms for decoration

For the Topping:

  • Gummy worms (as many as you like)
  • Crushed chocolate cookies (for the “dirt”)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Crush the chocolate sandwich cookies into fine crumbs by placing the cookies in a Ziploc bag and crushing them with a rolling pin or using a food processor. Save a small portion of the cookie crumbs (about 1 cup) to use as a topping later.

In a separate bowl, mix the remaining crumbs with melted butter. Press half of this mixture into the bottom of your glass trifle bowl, creating the cake’s base.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate and vanilla instant pudding mix with the cold milk. Whisk until the mixture thickens, which usually takes about 2 minutes.

Once the pudding is ready, pour half over the cookie crumb base inside the glass trifle bowl. This will serve as the “mud” layer for your No Bake Diet of Worm Cake.

In another bowl, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Gently fold in the whipped topping, creating a luscious and fluffy layer. This layer represents the “soil” above the pudding layer. Spread the cream cheese mixture on top of the pudding layer in your glass bowl.

Layer the remaining crushed chocolate cookies or Oreos on top of the cream cheese layer to add extra texture and flavor.

Spoon the remaining pudding on top of the crushed Oreos.

Sprinkle the reserved cookie crumbs on top. Decorate with gummy worms! Chill to allow to set for about 2 hours. Enjoy!

Notes

Tips and Tricks
Instead of using two different instant pudding mixes, opt for just the chocolate version for a stronger chocolate flavor.
You can also, add an extra 4 oz of whipped topping to the cream cheese mixture if you wish to double its layer. I opted to just do one layer but you can easily double this.
