Eton Mess

With just 4 ingredients and a few minutes to whip up, this classic English dessert – ETON MESS is the perfect summer dessert! Always a hit whenever I make this!

We had a holiday in England last June – perfect time for all that glorious English strawberries. Naturally, we’ve had many desserts that use these yummy berries. Our favorite of all is this English classic — Eton Mess. You know why?

It wasn’t only delicious but has just 4 ingredients  — meringue, cream, strawberries, and sugar! When you use store-bought meringue (which I do) all you need is 10 minutes to make this awesome summer dessert! Seriously!

You are probably wondering how it got its name. There have been quite a few speculations about its origins.

According to Wikipedia, this was first mentioned in print in 1893 and is commonly believed to have originated from the prestigious Eton College. In case you wish to know, Eton College (perhaps the most distinguished secondary school in England) was founded nearly 600 years ago by King Henry VI. How’s that for pedigree?

Eton mess was served at the annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School and was readily available in the school’s tuck shop. It was originally made with either strawberries or bananas mixed with ice cream or cream but the meringue was added later.

While Eton mess may be similarly made with other fruits or berries, strawberries are considered more traditional.

However and which way you make it, it’s always fresh-tasting and delicious!

I’m not familiar with store bought meringue.
Where in the supermarket would you find it?

I think you need to ask your own grocery if they carry it and where. I get mine from Trader Joes and I think it’s in the cookie section but I’ve seen some of it in either in the candy section or sometimes near the fruits so it could be anywhere.

I also have no idea what kind of meringue y’all are talking about. The only time I have heard the term meringue used is referring to the whipped egg white topping on a pie.

I’m from the Philippines and I grew up eating meringue cookies. They’re not impossible to find and pretty common – you’ll find them in bakeries and groceries. Ask your local bakery about it so you can be familiar with it – that would be my suggestion. Trader Joe’s always had them. Always available on Amazon too or do a google search and once you see what they look like you’d realize you’ve seen them before.

It looks like what my mom used to call divinity. She always made it for Christmas and it was so good. You just don’t hear about it anymore.
